Why I Support the Green New Deal & Believe You Should Too

Find out how to contact your local representative here. It’s no news that there is a lack of leadership when it comes to acting on climate change not only with the current administration, but globally. As discussed in my last post, How One Person Can Affect Climate Change on a Mass Scale, experts predicted up to a record number of private jets in and out of airfields serving Swiss ski resort for the World Economic Forum for a climate conference this month, many countries have not reached their emissions reduction target, and the current President of the United States, one of the largest contributors of emissions, denies that climate change even exists, which could eventually cost the country ‘billions of dollars’. Most importantly, the recent report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change stated that humanity has just over a decade to get carbon emissions under control before catastrophic climate change impacts become unavoidable. This is why I was pleased to hear a bold Green New Deal proposed today by Sen. Ed Markey (D-MA) and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. This Green New Deal is a massive program of investments in clean-energy jobs and infrastructure, meant to transform not just the energy sector, but the entire economy. It is meant both to decarbonize the economy and to make it fairer and more just. Some of its measures include:

  • Government-led investment in energy and resource efficiency, as well as reusable energies and microgeneration;

  • Low-carbon infrastructure redevelopment in order to create jobs

  • A directed tax on the profits of oil and gas companies with proceeds being invested in renewable energy and energy efficiency

  • Financial incentives for green investment and reduced energy usage, including low interest rates for green investment

  • Curbing corporate tax evasion through compulsory financial reporting and by clamping down on tax havens

  • Upgrading all existing buildings" in the country for energy efficiency

  • Working with farmers "to eliminate pollution and greenhouse gas emissions ... as much as is technologically feasible" (while supporting family farms and promoting "universal access to healthy food

  • Overhauling transportation systems" to reduce emissions — including expanding electric car manufacturing, building "charging stations everywhere," and expanding high-speed rail to "a scale where air travel stops becoming necessary

  • A guaranteed job "with a family-sustaining wage, adequate family and medical leave, paid vacations and retirement security" for every American

  • High-quality health care" for all Americans.

Our current policies are only hurting us as a country and I believe this Green New Deal is the swift action we need. Our current policies negatively affect our health, our environment, and our economy and it’s senseless and dangerous to continue down this path. I am a leader in the solar industry because I am truly passionate about transitioning the world to solar and believe in a better world for my child and the generations to come. Now is the time to act and with something as simple as a phone call, you can help to act on climate and fight for a better future. I urge to reach out to your Senators and Congressmen today to show support for this Green New Deal.
